Chapter 21

A workman arrived at Jane’s house shortly before eight a.m. After introducing herself, Jane listened as he explained that he was the only one who’d be working today. He expected to remove all of the patio tile by noon, and then after lunch, he’d start digging the trench. If everything went as planned, he’d pour the footings tomorrow. He hoped to have the entire job done by the end of the week.

Jane didn’t much care for having someone at the house when she wasn’t home, but with Beryl and Edgar away, it couldn’t be helped. Both Sigrid and Cordelia had to be at work by ten, and so did she.

After giving the man her office phone number and asking him to call if he ran into any problems, she spent the rest of the morning at the Lyme House in a meeting with her head chef about the restaurant’s proposed holiday menu. By two, she’d made all the arrangements for tomorrow night’s dinner party. In between other matters, she’d placed several calls to Earl Wilcox’s cell phone, but for whatever reason, hadn’t reached him. She wanted to fill him in on everything she’d learned since their last conversation. Her most interesting bit of news centered on the talk she’d had last night with Patricia. The fact that she’d brought up that old German saying made Jane wonder if there actually was some connection between the carved wooden eye found in Kevin Torland’s pocket and the Kastner family. Dr. Cyril Dancing’s suicide was also an important lead, one that needed to be pursued.

By three, Jane had finished her most pressing work and decided to run home to check on the workman’s progress. Pulling her car into the drive next to the house a few minutes later, she noticed that the man she’d talked to earlier in the day had been replaced by a younger man. All of the old patio tile was piled next to the fence, so he was making good progress.

Stepping across the drive into the backyard, she could see that the new man had just begun work on the trench. “What happened to Harlan?” she asked, snaking her way in between a wheelbarrow and several sacks of cement.

The man stopped digging. Wiping the sweat from his forehead, he gave her a friendly smile. “You must be Ms. Lawless.”

She nodded.

“The crew foreman took Harlan to the hospital. I think it might be his appendix. He was complaining all day yesterday about a pain in his lower stomach. Anyway, since my work was done over at Ms. Kastner’s house, I offered to come up here and finish out the day. I didn’t think anyone would mind.”

“No, I’m happy you’re here. But—do you know if Harlan’s okay?”

“I expect I’ll hear something before the day’s out. I’ll let you know before I leave.”

“Thanks,” she said, moving off toward the house. She was sorry the older fellow had been taken ill, but if it really was his appendix, the hospital was the right place to be.
